Beyond Garden Hill
Winter 2017

Greetings from the Alumni Committee!

The Alumni Committee is heading into its sixth year, and Mountain School graduates are coming together more than ever before, whether for social connection, professional networking, or collaborating on common causes. And yet, the Committee is striving for even greater engagement, because, as David and Nancy Grant said, "good things happen when Mountain School alumni know each other" . Here are five ways you can get connected:

  1. Join the Mountain School Alumni Group on LinkedIn.
  2. Post to our alumni bulletin board and read what others are posting.
  3. Attend our events or organize your own with alumni near you—we can help make it happen.
  4. Share your work by being featured on our Alumni Endeavors page.
  5. Follow TMS on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

'Mountain School Where You Live' events in May will honor Marilyn Covey & Pam Mainville

Save the date: May 13 & 14, 2017
PicturePam Mainville, left, and Marilyn Covey
Mountain School Where You Live (MSWYL) is an annual event where alumni, family, and friends are encouraged to gather to appreciate some aspect of their common place. Volunteer alumni plan and host their own events. Past events have included hikes, potluck meals, literary tours, art tours, farm work, visits to historic landmarks, camping, and community service.

This year, we'd like the MSWYL weekend to be a little different.

Marilyn Covey and Pam Mainville will both retire from the Mountain School in June. Together they represent 50 years—33 for Marilyn as Head Chef and 17 for Pam as Chef—of keeping Mountain School students, faculty, and their families not only fed, but nourished. Marilyn has also served as
the editor of the alumni newsletter, Pearls & Seaweed, as well as the reunion organizer.

We'd like to help Marilyn and Pam savor their final semester and honor them at our MSWYL events by sharing a theme of enjoying Mountain School food. Alumni hosts can interpret this theme as they'd like: have a potluck with dishes from Marilyn's cookbook, make your own versions of favorite Mountain School meals, or try variations on Fudgy Oat Squares. Anything goes. It will be delicious and fun!

Ultimately we'd like to give Marilyn and Pam messages and photos—both of smiling faces and food made with love—from these events. In order to make this happen, we need alumni hosts! Please sign up to host a Mountain School Where You Live event. Events should be planned for the weekend of May 13-14, but having an event on an alternate date is also an option.

February 15:
Garden Hill Fund application deadline

Grants from the Garden Hill Fund—which is made possible by the generosity of alumni—support the good work of Mountain School graduates whose endeavors focus on the common good, in their own communities and the larger world. Read more and apply online here.

Fall 2016 Garden Hill Fund
grant recipients announced

In last fall's round of the Garden Hill Fund (GHF), five graduates shared $20,000 generously donated by alumni. Their projects were chosen by two separate committees, one made up of former and current Alumni Committee members, and the other comprised of current students in Jack Kruse's Humanities class. The Humanities students solicited input from all students in their semester during a Friday night activity and then made the final decision of which proposals to fund and how much money to allocate to each project. As with previous rounds of the GHF, the selected projects have significant potential for positive impact, both locally and globally.

Congratulations to the Fall '16 grant recipients:
  • Jackson Koeppel s09 ($2,000)
Utility Justice in Highland Park, MI
  • Jenny Van West f84 ($5,000)
Portland, ME Immigrant Musical Instrument Project
  • Kristen Case s93 ($2,000)
The Cascade Brook Sense of Place Project
  • Samantha (Brynn) Kusic s95 ($3,000)
Pocahontas Country Opera House Youth Engagement Initiative
  • Sara Wasserman s97 ($8,000)
