A View From the HillFebruary is almost here, and we are excited to meet and welcome the students of Spring 2020 this Saturday when they arrive! Temperatures have been relatively mild, snow covers the landscape, and the new sugarhouse awaits its very first season of boiling sap. Among the group of new students coming to Vershire are three whose parents all attended the school, a record number. Some other numbers: Nine students are siblings of a Mountain School graduate; thirteen hail from the West Coast; fourteen students identify as a person of color; and the 25 girls and 19 boys come from 30 different schools. Alumni visits this coming semester include Gus Griffin f08, a recent Garden Hill Fund recipient who will be working on a log hive demonstration to encourage an increased presence of bees and other pollinators on campus. Also coming in mid-April is Aarev Sundaresh s00 and Katie Connolly f94 in mid-May. This winter we are also happy to have Walker Cammack s11 cheffing it up in the kitchen during Matt Severson's parental leave. If you are interested in visiting the school during the semester, contact Annie at annie.janeway@mountainschool.org in the Alumni Office to let us know your date for a day trip. February 29 is the snowshoe-a-thon and this is an ideal occasion for graduates to take part in a community fundraiser by hiking up to school for lunch and joining in the carnival atmosphere. A note to spring semester alumni that February 21 is the deadline to send in class notes for the next edition of Pearls and Seaweed. We are hoping to hear from you either directly to Annie or through your class agent. Before you know it, it will be mid-March and we will be filling this place with our alumni friends from one year ago at the Sugaring Reunion. Seeing these recent alumni greet each other and feel back at home here captures the essence of this place and its lasting bonds of shared experience. So, bring on the sugaring season and winter fun! Join the Alumni Committee!Apply now to join the Committee at our spring meeting in Boston, May 1-3. The mission of the Alumni Committee is to support the dynamic community of Mountain School graduates by connecting them to each other and the school and helping them carry forward the intellectual curiosity, celebration of place, and commitment to service we associate with the Mountain School. To carry out this mission, we need a diverse group of committed alumni to help drive engagement. In short, we need YOU! Learn more about the Committee and apply here by January 31st. Come Have Fun at the 23rd Annual Community Snowshoe-a-thon and Winter Carnival![]() Join us and the surrounding community for the 23rd annual Vershare-Mountain School Snowshoe-a-thon on Saturday, February 29 from 10-around 2pm! Leap into fun and fitness with this perennial favorite winter event. A great time to visit with Mountain School faculty and students. This snowshoe trek starts at 10 a.m. at the Vershire Town Center and proceeds two miles through a beautiful wooded course, with a good portion of the terrain on Mountain School trails. This is a wonderful community event to raise money for a local kids summer camp program. The day includes the opportunity to see the new sugarhouse, a fabulous chili lunch at the Mountain School, and a family-friendly winter carnival on campus with faculty and students of s20. There are snowshoes to borrow, or you might consider your own traction footwear (e.g. MICROspikes). Make a donation of any size on the day of the event or, if you can't join in, consider sponsoring one of the faculty children who will be participating. Alumni, friends, and family are all welcome! The Mountain School can provide transportation from Hanover, NH. To sign up or find out more, email or call Annie at 802-685-4520 x114. Additional info will be available soon at vershare.org. Apply for a Spring 2020 Garden Hill Fund GrantIf you have an endeavor that focuses on the common good in your community or the larger world, consider applying for a Garden Hill Fund grant for up to $10,000. The Garden Hill Fund not only supports the work of alumni, but also engages Mountain School students, who, along with the Alumni Committee, carefully select grant recipients and allocate funds. A note for recent alumni: If you are interested in funding for a gap year project, internship, certification, or course that will benefit the common good, you should apply.
